I’m a very sound sleeper, but there are times when I wake up with a start. For instance, if I’m having a dream that I should be paying attention to, I usually wake up as soon as it’s over. Another thing that will cause me to wake up suddenly is if I feel that Cheryl’s hurt, scared, or bothered. Last night, I woke up with what was apparently the latter.
I lay there not really knowing why I was awake when about 30 seconds later I heard Cheryl say, “Hmm?” A moment later, she said, “What?” in an irritated manner. I should tell you that Cheryl has a funny habit of speaking while she sleeps. Not sleep talking in the traditional sense, but I have had full blown conversations with her that she won’t remember the next day!
I used to tease her that perhaps she’s the next Edgar Cayce (she didn’t know who he was), in other words, I thought Cheryl might be a “sleeping prophet”. Once, to test this theory I started talking to her while she was sleeping.
“Cheryl?”
“Hmm.”
“May I ask you a question?”
“Sure.”
“What’s the cure for Aids?”
A puzzled look came over her face. “What’s the cure for Aids?”
“Yes.”
“There’s no cure for Aids.”
“I know that, honey. But I was wondering if you knew what the cure for Aids is?”
“How would I know what the cure for Aids is?”
Well, that blew away all of my hopes that she was the Cayce of our day! Of course, the next morning she didn’t remember a word of that conversation.
She did remember this morning that someone kept trying to wake her last night. “Someone kept trying to wake me up last night.”
“I know,” I told her. “You were talking in your sleep.” I told her what I heard, and then asked her what she felt.
“It felt as though someone was grabbing my shoulder and trying to shake me awake,” she said. One of the things that struck me was that she was so nonchalant about it. Familiar may breed contempt, but when it comes to hauntings, it’s more like boredom.
Speaking of which, last night, Cheryl and I were talking about how we know longer hear what sounds like the boxes down there being moved. We’re now hearing what sounds like gun shots.

Despite the overall theme and purpose of this blog, this post is not about our home. I honestly thought I’d hung up my “investigator shoes” a least a year ago. By that I mean that I just wasn’t going to participate in a ghost hunt in any capacity whatsoever. Then I received an offer I couldn’t refuse.
Yesterday I met an owner of a hotel and it’s sales manager. Guess what? The hotel is reputed to be haunted, and they want me to look into it.
At first they approached me (not knowing anything about this blog, and they still don’t know about it) as a psychic type. I did a walk through with the sales manager and another member of the staff. As I started giving them my impressions, they gave me way more information than I wanted. They couldn’t help it I guess. They were freaking out about the things I was telling them, things I couldn’t possibly have known, because the hotel, like most businesses of this sort kept the reports hush hush, feeling it was bad for business.
I prefer to work with as little information as possible. So now, I’ve put out a call to a couple of psychics I know, and I’m going to lead an investigation of the hotel. They won’t know anything about the investigation until the last possible moment. What does that mean? They won’t know anything but the city the investigation is taking place in. We’ll meet somewhere, and I’ll then take them to the hotel.
I have to admit, I am looking forward to this little project. The best thing is that this is a paid investigation!
What’s up with the bathroom lights? A spirit feeds off of Cheryl’s energy, too. July 18, 2009

I decided to go ahead and post this because as I was recounting to Cheryl was just happened (less than 5 minutes ago) I not only felt a presence next to me, but Cheryl told me that the hairs on both of her arms “stood straight up.”
Earlier today Cheryl and I were looking at a townhouse that friends of ours told us about. A woman died in the house, and her children have had it listed for sale for 4 years. While we were looking at it with a realtor, Cheryl decided to turn the lights in the bathroom on in the upstairs hallway, and they flickered on and off. The three of us wrote it off to bad wiring.
Tonight I was thinking about the lights in the townhouse, and how in some cases of hauntings lights flicker on and off, an electrician is brought in, and nothing can be found wrong with the wiring. I then got up to go to the guest bathroom. There are two doors and three switches in that bathroom, two for the lights, and one for the fan. I turned on the one for the lights, which didn’t come on.
I just kept walking to the other end of the guest bathroon, and flipped that switch. Still the lights didn’t come on.
So I flipped the switch back down. No lights.
I flipped the switch back up and, lo and behold, lights! Now, don’t ask me why, but I flipped the switch back down, and turned the lights back off. I then flipped it back up and, again, no lights. “Oh great,” I thought to myself, “that’s all we need, electrical problems.” So I flipped the switch back down, and the lights came back on.
When I was done in the bathroom, I went to both switches and tried to turned them off, and cause them to stay off. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t get them to do it again. The lights went on and off which each flick of the switch.
I hear heavy footsteps in the hallway. July 16, 2009

Right after publishing the last post I went into the guest bathroom which is right off of the Teton room. While I was in there I heard footsteps coming down the hallway. Since Cheryl and I are the only two here (technically speaking) I thought it was her, getting ready for work in a big hurry, since the footsteps were so loud and heavy.
The guest bathroom has two doors and I hadn’t closed either of them. I clearly heard the footsteps stop at the utility room door, and then walk by down towards the master bedroom.
I walked towards bedroom to see if I could help Cheryl in any way since she seemed to be so frantic. I found her in the walk-in closet. I asked her if that was her walking in the hallway a couple of minutes before, and she told me that it wasn’t. So I asked her to walk back and forth in the closet. Since the closet is carpeted, when she walked, the sounds of her footsteps were muffled.
So I said, “I’m going to walk down the hallway to the utility room and when I say, ‘Now,’ I’d like you to walk back and forth in the closet.” She asked me to give her a minute to get ready and then she’d do it.
I asked her if she was ready and when I heard a muffled “yes” I said, “Now!” I could hear her walking and still it wasn’t what I heard earlier. “Would you do it one more time, but this time fast?” I called out.
“Okay!” Again, I heard her footsteps, faster this time, but no where near as loud as before. This confirmed for me that the footsteps I heard were coming from the hallway.
I’m sure that these are the same footsteps Cheryl has told me that she’s heard so many times. In fact, when I tried to discuss it with her, it was no big deal as far as she was concerned.
I’ve never been an advocate of doing an “investigation” by yourself. For one thing, if you’re in the home of someone you don’t know, it could be dangerous, and the danger isn’t necessarily coming from the ghosts. The living are much scarier as far as I’m concerned. The other reason is that it’s hard to “prove” your evidence if you’re alone.
However, this is my home, and I’m usually the only one here during the day. Cheryl and I usually have something going at night, even if it’s just watching television. She did, a couple of days ago, agree to go through the house with me at some point with a digital recorder while I had an instrument of some sort to try to pick up anomalous energy(ies). So I think I’m just going to start going through the house trying to collect EVPs for the time being.
I’ll let you know, what, if anything I pick up.

Last night I was laying in bed reading a book when I heard Cheryl ask from her office, which is in the room next to the master bedroom, what I was doing. “I’m laying in bed reading,” I called out to her.
“Oh,” was all she said in reply.
A few minutes later I heard her ask, “Did you take Prince out to go potty?” I thought it was a strange question since Prince had been in the office with her for at least 30 minutes while I was in the Teton room. If I had taken him outside she would have known about it. Still I called out, “No, I haven’t taken Prince out to go potty.”
Then I heard her ask if he wanted to go potty. I got up to take him out thinking that she must be be her computer working on an issue we’re dealing with. I walked to the office door and was about to tell Prince I was going to take him outside when Cheryl asked, “Why did you say that?”
“Say what?”
“That you hadn’t taken Prince out to go potty?”
“Didn’t you ask me if I had?”
“No.”
“Well, what did you say after you asked me what I was doing and I told you I was in bed reading?”
“Nothing really. I said, ‘Oh,’ and then I yawned, that’s all,” Cheryl said laughing.
Now, I’ve admitted several times on this blog that my hearing isn’t what it should be. Often Cheryl hears things that I don’t, and I generally have the volume on the television on higher than Cheryl would if she were watching tv by herself. But I know that I heard a woman (whom I would have sworn was Cheryl) ask me if I had taken Prince out.
Cheryl swears it wasn’t her so I have no idea who it was. Who knows? Maybe it’s the same woman I heard one night asking Prince if he wanted to play. I thought that was Cheryl too, but she was sound asleep when I heard it.

I’ve been here in the Teton room pretty much since Cheryl and I got home this afternoon. At one point I picked up the messages on our phone and I was returning a phone call. While I was on the phone Cheryl came to the door, looked in and walked away. When I got off of the phone I went to see what she wanted.
“I just wanted to tell you that a little while ago I thought I was following you, but it wasn’t you!”
“What do you mean,” I asked her.
“I thought I saw you go into the hallway and I followed you!”
“How far did you go?”
“Well, I thought I saw you come from here,” Cheryl said, pointing to the entryway by the bannister, “and then ‘you’ turned and walked down the hallway.” She then started walking into the hallway leading to the bedroom, “I followed you because I wanted to give you a hug.
I walked to here and felt a blast of cold air right here.” She stop in the area between the office and master bedroom. “I came into the bedroom and looked around but you weren’t here. That’s when I found you in the Teton room.”
This actually happened several hours ago today, but we had unexpected company so I was pulled away. What did Cheryl see? I’m not sure, but there is a possibility that she saw a “recording” of me walking from the Teton room towards the master bedroom.
Cheryl’s portrait July 12, 2009

Cheryl has a portrait of herself that she keeps in a closet for safekeeping. The last time she took it out would have been about three weeks ago when she wanted to get something out of there.
She pulled it out again today and got the shock of her life. It looks as though someone spit on it!
I was in the family room when I heard, “Sweetheart, please come here! I want you to look at this!” Because of the tone of her voice I came to see what she wanted as quick as I could (I’m very protective of her). “Look at my portrait!”
When I saw what she was looking at, I asked her where she had it in the closet and how she had it. I looked carefully to see if there were any leaks in the closet. Even if there were, there was no way it would have ended up on the front of the portrait the way she had it.
“Wow, it almost looks like spittle,” I said. Whatever it was started at the top of portrait glass and dripped down. It’s a dull white in color, and splattered. It went from the top of the glass and almost reached the bottom, with two more splatters on the left. There’s no way, as important as this portrait of her is that she would have missed it.
“That’s what I thought too!” Cheryl replied.
“When you took it out before and put it back, did you notice that the glass was wet?”
“No! The first time I saw this was now, when I pulled it out to take a picture of it! I wondered if something spilled inside the closet so I looked around myself. Then I started thinking about the last time I pulled it out, and I know this wasn’t on there. That’s when I called you.
What happened to the picture? We don’t know. All I can tell you is that it appears as though the last time she pulled it out of the closet and set it down, and put it away again, someone intentionally spit on it, not once, but at least twice while she wasn’t looking. As Cheryl said, “If it wasn’t one of our guests who did this, I have no idea how else it could have happened.
A couple of “do’s and don’t do’s” when it comes to EVP experiments. July 12, 2009

One thing about Cheryl – when something like what happened last night occurs, she really wants to understand what’s going on! When I was writing last night’s post after apparently crossing the boy over, I mentioned that I kept hearing things but wrote it as Henry prowling around. I’m pretty sure most of what I hear was exactly that.
When I got back to bed, Cheryl had the digital recorder in her hand, doing her own evp experiment. She told me she heard someone waking from the bedroom into the master bathroom, so she decided to see if she could catch her own evps, but she didn’t know how to stop the recorder. I turned it off for her and we listened to what she recorded.
She did a great job asking questions along the lines she heard me just ask. At one point she asked, “What’s your name?” We both heard a young woman respond, but we couldn’t agree on the first name. I thought it sounded like, “Suzy,” and she thought it sounded like, “Amy.” We both agreed that we heard, “Smith” as the last name.
As we were listening she started smelling a new fragrance. She said it was “clean” like the last one, but this time is was “muskier,” more “woodsy.” If it weren’t dark she would have seen that the look on my face was total confusion. “Muskier,” and “woodsier;” what the hell does that mean? I didn’t have to wonder for long because suddenly I got a good whiff of it myself, even though my nose was still stuffy (if I opened my mouth and breathed in, I could smell it).
We heard other things, including a voice that sounded hollow and metallic. That voice was loudest, but hardly clear in what it was saying. Cheryl kept asking me things about EVPs, and what I thought was going on long after I was ready to go to sleep! LOL
I thought Cheryl did a great job, and I told her so, but one of the things Cheryl did ask which I told her wasn’t a good idea was, “What do you want me to do for you?” She asked this twice. Cheryl was trying to be helpful, as she’s a beautiful soul always wanting to help someone in need. But this is a horrible question to ask!
The spirits that we were trying to communicate with haven’t crossed over yet, so there’s no telling what kind of response you’re going to get asking this question. I know of one woman who asked this question in her apartment, and the answer she got was, “Die.” In Cheryl’s case, it was, “F___ somebody.” Apparently this spirit is a voyeur or extremely frustrated at not having had sex for all these years.
Whenever I do evp work, it’s only to collect evidence that a conscious spirit is present – that’s all. I’m not trying to develop a friendship with it. Last year I was in Pennsylvania to appear on a television show, and to do a couple of seminars with Natalie Smith-Blakeslee, a very gifted medium herself. During one of the seminars I asked a man if he knew who a certain person was. He was excited to tell me that he did, and wanted to know as much as he could about this person (a young girl).
After the seminar was over, I found out from Natalie that she not only knew this man, but she knew about the girl I asked about. It turns out that this guy was investigating a bridge nearby that was supposedly haunted. He even asked Natalie to help him with the investigation, which she did, but told him it was a dangerous place to be spending a lot of time at.
It turns out that he not only spent a lot of time there, but that he literally became obsessed with this girl he first heard from through an evp. He was hanging around after the seminar, so Natalie asked me to talk to him and try to talk him out of what he was doing. When I did sit down with him it became apparent apparent to me that he was not only consumed by this ghost, he was in love. Yes, I’m serious.
Now, I didn’t know him before, and I’ve never seen him since, so I don’t know what his mental stability (or lack thereof) was like. Natalie and her husband had known him for years before, and assure me that he seemed fine before he started investigating the bridge.
My point is, whenever someone is doing something like evp experiments, or any sort of investigation, I believe that they should keep their distance. You’re trying to understand what’s going on, not develop new friendships.

Cheryl and I might have crossed over the little culprit who’s been responsible for some of the activity lately!
Cheryl has been really tired lately, and tonight she fell asleep really early on the floor in the family room while I watched television. At 10:30 I woke her up (actually I had turned the television off and fell asleep myself) and we got ready for bed. While we were laying in bed she asked me if I closed the door to the Teton room (my office) so Henry, her brother’s family cat who’s visiting us doesn’t get in here while we’re sleeping.
I got up to check (I hadn’t closed the door so I closed it) and went back to bed. When I got back in bed Cheryl asked me if I heard the “beeping sound.” She said she heard 5 distinct beeps like I was pressing the buttons on the microwave.. I hadn’t heard it and told her so. While we were talking about what she heard, she grabbed one my hands, and then the other. “Wow, I just felt a cold touch on my neck. There it is again.”
I asked her what it felt like and she said it felt like she was being touched by three cold fingers. She said the cold felt like the cold of an ice pack on her neck. We started talking about that when she asked me if I was smelling what she was smelling. My nose was (is) stuffed up, and I really couldn’t smell it, but occasionally while I was talking to her I could almost taste what she was talking about. She kept describing it as a “clean, fresh, flowery smell.” She kept smelling it off and on, asking me if I smelled it.
I decided now was the time to try to figure out what was going on, so I went out to the bar in the kitchen and got my digital recorder. When I got back to bed I told Cheryl to tell me the next time she smelled the fragrance she was talking about. “I smell it,” she said, so I started recording, noting the date and time, and that Cheryl and I were in bed.
I then started asking questions like, “Who are you?” “What’s your name?” “What do you want?”
I then explained that I was holding a device that would allow us to hear whomever was there apparently wanting to communicate with us. When we played back the recording, we both heard something like, “What are you …?” We couldn’t make out the last part.
When it came to the part where I was explaining we would be able to hear what they wanted to say was almost drowned out by a very breathy voice. “My mother … from cholera.” We couldn’t hear part of it, but it made sense the word we couldn’t hear was “died.” Then we heard, very clearly, “I want my mommy.” The voice was so breathy, we couldn’t make out an age, but it did sound male.
“That’s where I lost my …” the next part could have been mommy, but in all honesty, it could have been “laundry” as well. We decided to go with “mommy.” I turned the recorder off.
“I think your mommy’s here to get you now.” I suddenly felt the energy of a presence to my left. The energy was strong.
“I smell that scent again, really strong!” Cheryl said.
“Your mommy’s here to get you,” I continued. “You should be able to see her now.” Suddenly I felt the energy rush to my right, towards Cheryl. She told me later that the hairs on her arm stood up. “I think he found his mommy,” I said to Cheryl. “Tell me if you smell that scent again.”
We waited for several minutes, and when Cheryl didn’t smell it, it confirmed to us that whoever it was had crossed over. “I’m going to blog this,” I told her, and got out of bed. While I’ve been writing this I’ve been hearing sounds coming from the family room, but they are probably Henry as he prowls the house.
Well, I’m off to bed! Good night!

I thought that this comment is so great, I wanted to answer it in a post.
I was going to ask you what you thought about orbs. I used to walk around my house and snap pictures all the time, after my first ghostly encounter, to see if I could catch an orb especially if I got a freezing cold sensation. I got a new digital camera last July and noticed that it doesn’t pick up the orbs like the other camera I had. I wonder if it had to do with the mega pixels or something like that. I still snap a picture when something out of the ordinary happens. When my husband heard my daughter’s radio come on and he heard a young voice singing along I snapped several pictures and caught one orb in only one of the pictures and it was right after he heard the radio and the voice. The orb always seems to appear in the picture after or at the time of the experience.
My husband, kids and I like to watch TAPS, Paranormal state, Ghost Hunters International and another that I can’t remember the name of… sometimes we wonder if they are making stuff up . We also talked about the 3 am thing and the turning out the lights …we thought it was silly, because our ghost or ghosts like to make themselves know anytime of the day not just at night in the dark. I’ve never used any equipment so I don’t know anything about it…and I’m not psychic.
Cheryl and I have both seen orbs of light floating around our home, with our naked eyes. We have taken pictures in which we had numerous orbs in one, and none in the next, or vice versa. When I first started doing investigations I was taught that orbs were “ghosts.” And I believed it. After so many years of doing investigations, I came to the conclusion that while they were some sort of energy, I started wondering who came to the conclusion that they were spirits, and why? As far as I’m concerned, the jury’s still out on that one.
A few years ago I was in the Whaley House, in San Diego, California, and I felt a “presence” around me so I took two pictures with my Sony Digital (it was top of the line for about 5 minutes after I bought it!). When I looked at them later I realized that in the first one there was nothing there, but in the second one you could see a full figure of a man who appears to be Thomas Whaley from behind! Even my very skeptical brother said it’s the “best” picture he had ever seen.
Still, I tell everyone that it’s not a picture of a “ghost.” If it was, I would have seen it when I took the picture, which I didn’t. It’s an image place on the memory stic by a “disembodied consciousness (which is what I believe an apparition is).” In other words, I believe it’s a picture of a “thought” or memory. I’d post it but even the staff of the Whaley House hasn’t seen it yet.
As far as some of the shows you mentioned, well, there is a website devoted to debunking them. I don’t understand why they turn off the lights to do their investigations, but a lot of so-called “ghost hunting teams” do the same thing – essentially following their example. If I did turn the lights off, it would have been because the people who claimed to be experiencing paranormal activity said it happened when the lights were off.
But why would anyone do an investigation at night with the lights off if they were told that the “ghost” showed up at one in the afternoon? I’m sorry, I’ll get off of my soapbox.
Sorry about the rambling … I’m up way past my bedtime. I’ll share my thoughts on equipment, and being psychic in another post.
